Female pilot to become IAF combat squadron deputy commander; N. will be promoted to the rank of Lt.-Col. when she takes up her role next year, by Anna Ahronheim, Jerusalem Post, August 18, 2021. Excerpt:

Another woman has broken the glass ceiling in the Israel Air Force and has been appointed deputy commander of an IAF combat squadron.

She was appointed by IAF Commander Maj.-Gen. Amikam Norkin on Tuesday night.

Norkin appointed Maj. N. (her name is withheld due to security reasons) as commander of the 119th “Bat” Squadron, which flies F-16s out of the Ramon Airbase in the south of the country.

N. completed the pilot’s course in 2015 and was trained as a navigator. The 28-year-old from central Israel is currently serving as head of the IAF Commander’s Office. She will be promoted to the rank of lieutenant-colonel when she starts her position next year.

She is the latest woman to get promoted to a senior role in the IAF, which along with the entire military is working to have more women in senior positions.


Another woman breaks IDF’s glass ceiling; Lt.-Col. C will serve as Deputy Commander of Unit 8200 and be promoted to the rank of Colonel, by Anna Ahronheim, Jerusalem Post, July 19, 2021. Excerpt:

For the second time in less than a week, a woman has been appointed to a senior position in the IDF, this time as deputy commander of the Military Intelligence Directorate’s elite Unit 8200.

Lt.-Col. G has been promoted to the position of deputy commander of Unit 8200’s Digital Division and will receive the rank of colonel in the coming weeks, the IDF said in a press release. She is the first woman to hold the position.

G, whose full name cannot be disclosed, has held a wide range of roles in the fields of cybersecurity, intelligence and operations. She is currently the head of Unit 8200’s cyber center.

“I have been privileged to serve in Unit 8200, whose mission is to maintain the security of the State of Israel,” G said, adding that “our responsibility in the Intelligence Division is broad, from the collection of intelligence information to its extraction.
